The Bears of Katmai

 

The January 2012 issue of Western Art Collector includes a story about my Katmai trip with fellow artists Debbie Edgers Sturges and Linda St. Clair. On the cover is my painting "Shore Lunch."

The Studio by Barbara Coyner

The May/June 2011 Art of the West magazine features an article on my studio.  I must admit that their invitation to feature my studio was met with a certain degree of trepidation as my workspace is quite modest and utilitarian. However, my setting and surrounding ecosystem is a perpetual source of inspiration and an extension of my studio.

Barbara Coyner says, “Wildlife right outside the window – what could be more perfect for a guy who has been known for more than a quarter of a century for his realistic wildlife renditions.”

John Geraghty presents the Bob Kuhn Wildlife Award to Daniel Smith, 2/5/11

Daniel Smith wins Bob Kuhn Wildlife Award

 

Daniel Smith received the “Bob Kuhn Wildlife Award” given in recognition of exceptional artistic merit for his original painting, “Heavy Hitters” at the 14th annual Masters of the American West Fine Art Exhibition and Sale at the prestigious Autry National Museum, located in Los Angeles, CA on February 5, 2011. 

The Masters Show is an invitational art show and one of the country’s most important Western art show and sale.   The show raised over $3.2 million and featured nearly 276 pieces of art including paintings, drawings and sculptures from 75 of the nation’s premier Western artists.

 

Daniel is honored to be included in Acrylic Innovation written by Nancy Reyner for North Light Books. It is a great book for anyone interested in acrylics with valuable insight from 64 artists.

The July 2010 issue of Southwest Art features a story on both Daniel and Adam Smith - which is a first! Having Adam follow in Dan's footsteps has created an incredible bond that is exemplified in the article.

Duma was selected as the 2008 Gold Medal Winner


Daniel received the "Harrison Eiteljorg Purchase Award" for his original "Still Water Crossing" at the fourth annual
Quest for the West Art Show and Sale at the prestigious Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art
located in Indianapolis, IN on September 12, 2009. "Still Water Crossing" will hang in the permanent collection of
the Eiteljorg Museum.

"Duma" was selected as the "2008 Gold Medal Winner" at the The Greenwich Workshop Gallery's SmallWorks North America Show located in Fairfield, CT on November 29, 2008.

 
Lying in Wait - Artist of Distinction" award

Daniel Smith was granted the prestigious "Artist of Distinction" award at the second annual Quest for the West Art Show and Sale at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, located in Indianapolis, Indiana on September 8, 2007.

This award was presented to the artist with the best overall body of work exhibited in the show. Smith's paintings included "Lying in Wait," a 16" x 32" painting of a cougar lying in tall grass; "Frost and Fire," a 22" x 40" painting depicting three wolves and "Soakin` it Up," a 10" x 9" portrait of a swimming grizzly bear.

Saturation Point received the Peoples Choice Award

 

 

Saturation Point received the"Peoples Choice Award" at the Western Visions: Miniatures and More Show & Sale at the National Museum of Wildlife Art, located in Jackson Hole, Wyoming on September 18, 2008.

Art of the West magazine

The 20-year anniversary issue of Art of the West honors Daniel Smith as one of their choices among 21 artists as a future Master Western artist. Smith replies, "Thank you for your vote of confidence by selecting me as a potential future master. I am humbled by my inclusion and feel truly blessed to be able to make a living at something I love. It's a privilege to be able to share my experiences, vision and passion with so many."
