A wolf pack’s territory is extensive, covering between 100 and 260 square miles. Water crossings are inevitable while hunting in their vast domain. Wolves are competent swimmers, capable of crossing large bodies of water while in pursuit of prey. Autumn Crossing depicts this scenario under idyllic circumstances.

Anniversary Edition

Artists become known for signature works and increasingly Dan Smith’s “water” paintings are becoming “must haves” for collectors. As is the case for “Stillwater Crossing,” evidently “must haves” for museum collections as well. Dan created this painting specifically for the Eiteljorg Museum’s Quest for the West Art Show. In a strong overall showing of art, Smith’s painting won the show’s Harrison Eiteljorg Purchase Award and is now part of the museum’s permanent collection.

It is easy to see why museums and collectors think Smith is doing something special. Water and its qualities are one of the toughest real world experiences to translate convincingly into painting. From the reflective qualities of the placid surface to the bison’s turbulent wake, what you see here is flawless. A true signature work from a highly respected American artist.

This powerful predator roams the Americas, where it is also known as a puma, cougar and catamount. This big cat of many names is also found in many habitats, from Florida swamps to Canadian forests.
Mountain lions like to prey on deer, although they also eat smaller animals such as coyotes, porcupines, and raccoons. They usually hunt at night or during the gloaming hours of dawn and dusk. These cats employ a blend of stealth and power, stalking their prey until an opportunity arrives to pounce, then going for the back of the neck with a fatal bite.

Mountain lions once roamed nearly all of the United States. They were prized by hunters and despised by farmers and ranchers who suffered livestock losses at their hands. Subsequently, by the dawn of the 20th century, mountain lions were eliminated from nearly all of their range in the Midwest and Eastern U. S.

Mountain lions require a lot of room—only a few cats can survive in a 30-square-mile range. They are solitary and shy animals, seldom seen by humans.

The definition of ethereal is “extremely delicate and light in a way that seems too perfect for this world,” as fitting a definition for the small number of bison that remain in West as it is for the fog through which they now pass.

Certainly, a bison itself is anything but ethereal ― each is about as light and delicate as a Mack Truck.

Yellowstone’s winters are often severe with deep snows and temperatures that reach -44F. With thick skin and underfur, long hairs and layers of fat, these massive beasts are built to survive and thrive in such an environment. Even so the geyser basins, hot springs and thermals are attractive destinations during these frosty months.

In the mid-1990s, when wolves (which had been eradicated from the park) were reintroduced to Yellowstone, Daniel Smith worked with the Yellowstone Wolf Recovery Project, hiking through the park to observe the habits and environmental impact of the newly introduced wolves. Since then, wolves have become one of his favorite subjects and he paints them in all seasons.

“Living in the mountains of Montana has provided me with ample time to experience snow,” says Smith. “Fresh snow creates wonderful textures and a quiet serenity that is always inspiring. Wolf reintroduction in the West has rekindled my interest in this extraordinary predator.

“My paintings are a reflection of many years of field work and my passion for the natural world. My objective is to share my passion through a scientifically accurate, realistic painting while maintaining artistic integrity.”

There is a conversation going on here but we can only guess at the precise message. “Ravens and wolves share an interesting symbiotic relationship,” says artist Daniel Smith. “Ravens will lead wolves to winterkill because they are not capable of opening up the carcass with their beaks. Once the wolves do the job, they all feast. Vice versa, the ravens will follow the wolves, ever watchful for an opportunity to eat. Ravens are extremely clever birds and have been known to taunt the wolves in a game of dare. I have witnessed the taunting with our family dog while the raven was obviously entertained by his reaction.”

The Lamar Valley is located in the remote northeastern corner of Yellowstone National Park. A destination for serious wildlife-watching, it is home to elk, wolves, bear and bison. “Bison are the North American version of Cape Buffalo,” remarks Dan Smith. “I’ve been on foot around them in their habitat and to say they are intimidating is an understatement. What I enjoy about this painting is that its sedentary feel is in such contrast to the intense nature of the beast

“Painting the fur on the American Bison is a challenge in my highly realistic style. But when I do that successfully, you can get a real sense of proximity to this incredible beast. The smooth water of the Lamar River carries golden reflections of the surrounding prairie intermingled with the blue patches of sky. I am really pleased with how this painting came out.”

“Living close to Yellowstone National Park has its advantages,” relates Dan Smith, “especially when the bison rut is at its peak in July and August. There are three to four thousand bison in the park gathering in groups of 50 to 300. If you put yourself in the right place, you’re really going to see the dust fly.”

This access gave Dan a leg up at this year’s Masters of the American West Exhibition and Sale where the 30” x 48” “Heavy Hitters” took home the 2011 Bob Kuhn Wildlife Award for best wildlife painting. “It’s an incredible honor,” Smith states with awe. “I’m the youngest to have been selected for this award. You always hope that your work will be recognized, but never expect it. To be included in the ranks of Bob Kuhn, Tucker Smith, Ken Carlson and Kent Ullberg is a privilege.”

“Heavy Hitters” focus is the look in the eyes of a 2000 pound, six-feet tall by twelve-feet in length bison in rut that lets you know he means business. The ferocity of this intent combined with all that mass is an extraordinary display. The snorting and pawing of dirt builds to the point where the two males make contact. You know by the look in left-hand bison’s eyes that this is the real deal.

“Gone Fishing was inspired by a friend’s photo of brown bears taken in Katmai Park, Alaska,” says artist Daniel Smith. “The cubs are quite small so this would be in spring to early summer. These little guys will stay with their mother for almost two years and won’t reach their full size for another four years. Even the most hardened city-dweller knows about the bond between a mother bear and her cubs. The mother’s extreme protective instincts aren’t unfounded, especially concerning large boars, which will attack and kill cubs. She may be swimming ahead right now but her ears are cocked, listening for the paddles and grunts from the swimmers just behind her. Getting accustomed to water is not just play time for the young cubs. From late-August to mid-September, the sockeye salmon are spawning in the Brooks River at Katmai National Park and the bears are in and around the water eating fish for weeks, putting on the pounds and fat in preparation for November hibernation.

“The cougar’s damp coat emits an ethereal glow as moisture vaporizes into the silent wilderness. The rocky outcrop creates an excellent vantage point for the resting mountain lion as he surveys his domain. My home borders the Yellowstone ecosystem and has a healthy population of mountain lions. It is a rare thrill to experience these elusive predators in the wild.”

There is a return to things that radiate the greatness of our national heritage. One of our most renowned treasures is the American wilderness. “Radiant Repose” captures the essence of the untamed beauty that that makes the wilderness wild. The painting was created for the 2009 Couer D’Alene Auction.

“Mountain lions epitomize stealth and grace. They maintain fluidity of movement over unseen rock surfaces with amazing agility. They can leap up to twenty feet and subsequently are formidable predators. This great cat’s eye contact with its quarry creates a strong focal point and leaves no doubt that this feline is “Fully Engaged.”

Daniel’s use of early morning light cast across this sinuous mountain top brings to life the positive and negative shapes of this snow and rock terrain.

“Fully Engaged” captures the complete essence of this mountain lion in a single moment, a brief pause in an otherwise very physical existence. This 28″ x 20″ Fine Art Canvas Edition leaves us stilled at the fierce beauty of this alpine predator.

“I haven’t done a lot of fox paintings until recently,” says artist Daniel Smith. “We have fox around our home and recently had very regular visits over a two week period from a cross fox which is darker in coloration than this red fox. Fox are very shy, always on the move and somewhat difficult to photograph in the wild. This fox has taken a high vantage point in his relentless search for rodents.”

Red fox (Vulpes vulpes) has a wide distribution and adapts quickly which is why its population has increased alongside that of man. They are omnivores, eating berries and bugs, but prefer squirrel, rabbits, mice and other small mammals.

What I enjoy about this painting is that its sedentary feel is in such contrast to the intense nature of the beast.”

“Painting the fur on the American Bison is a challenge in my highly realistic style. But when I do that successfully, you can get a real sense of proximity to this incredible beast. The smooth water of the Lamar River carries golden reflections of the surrounding prairie intermingled with the blue patches of sky. ”

An accomplished wildlife painter, Smith captured the essence of this bear’s heft and character in this 10×10” original painting. “I feel the pose is somewhat anthropomorphic,” says the artist, “and therefore people are attracted to the composition.”

The complex social order of the wolf pack is as nurturing and caring an environment as one will find in the wild. An alpha male and female, or breeding pair, form the nucleus of this tight knit family. As with any potential relationship, first impressions will last a lifetime.

Few species have undergone the change in public perception, thanks to conservation and education efforts, like the wolf. Dan’s involvement with the Yellowstone Wolf Recovery Project in the mid-1990s, when wolves were first being reintroduced to the Park, reinvigorated his interest in this apex predator.

Daniel Smith’s paintings of wildlife, be it bear, moose, bison, crow or even otter, capture the complete essence of a species in a single moment, a brief pause in an otherwise very physical existence. Likewise viewing these paintings leaves us stilled, like hikers or mountaineers who round a bend and come unexpectedly upon the beauty and fierce intelligence of the animals who share our earth.

North American cougars are now largely extinct in the Northeast United States but are still prevalent in parts of the West, notably Wyoming which has the largest North American population. A solitary, stalk-and-ambush predator, cougar favor deer, elk, bighorn sheep and the occasional domestic cattle.

Fleeting Sun is unusual for Daniel Smith in that the sunlight is hitting his subject perpendicularly, highlighting the silky, tawny coat against the cool shadows of gathering dusk in the cliffs.

“When the fish are running and bear are feasting like this,” says Smith, “they won`t even waste their time eating the entire fish. They`ll focus on the skin and the fatty layer beneath, throwing the rest of the fish aside. On the surface it may appear wasteful, but it is extremely efficient when fattening up for the winter`s hibernation is the priority.

In prehistoric times bears were revered as gods. To this day, the power and magnificence of the bear stirs our imagination and emotions. Cool Runnings is a captivating portrait of an animal who has inspired both fear and fascination in mankind for millennia. Smith`s realistic style brings every drop of water and each wet hair on the grizzly`s face into sharp focus, making it clear that the artist has spent years studying these remarkable creatures.

The hush of an autumn morning is barely broken by the quiet rushing of water and the splashing steps of a bull and cow moose. “What drew me to this scene,” says Daniel Smith, “is its abstract quality, the division between the dark, still water of the background and the reflective bright water of the small cascade in the foreground. I always liked the peace and tranquility of running water, like watching a fire at night—it`s got that same mesmerizing quality.

“Landscape plays an important role in ‘Free Flight.’ I placed the eagle flying out of the painting to convey a feeling of motion and to offset the negative space of the panoramic landscape. I feel it gives the viewer a sense of following the eagle in flight. You can see where the eagle has been, not where it’s going.” Daniel Smith

Lions are the only members of the cat family to display obvious sexual dimorphism – that is, males and females look distinctly different. They also have specialized roles that each gender plays in the pride. For instance, the lioness, the hunter, lacks the male’s thick mane. The color of the male’s mane varies from blond to black, generally becoming darker as the lion grows older.

During confrontations with others, the mane makes the lion look larger Weights for adult lions range between 330–550 lbs. for males and 264–400 lbs. for females. Nowell and Jackson report average weights of 400 lbs. for males and 280 lbs. for females. Lions tend to vary in size depending on their environment and area, resulting in a wide spread in recorded weights. For instance, lions in southern Africa tend to be about 5 percent heavier than those in East Africa, in general.

In its day, the trawler “Sea Eagle” ventured forth, painted and proud. Surviving storms at sea, it returned to shore with its catch, time and again. Now abandoned, weathered by time and the elements, its voyages have become memories. But the kindred spirit, for which it was christened, still remembers. “I came across this abandoned fishing boat while on a research trip for killer whales. I was immediately drawn to its rusting hulk and eventually decided it would be an unusual subject for a painting. Perching a bald eagle on the bow of the boat seemed appropriate, given its name.

“In the silver stillness of a moonlit night you can hear the ancient song. At first a haunting solo, soon other voices join in: their nocturne ascending above the sparkling snow…There are few sounds that are symbolic of a true wilderness… I feel that wolves howling are the epitome of wilderness music.” – Daniel Smith.
